Team Lakay went one of two with Stephen Loman fortifying his superstar status after beating a legend who reigned the longest in the stacked bantamweight division of ONE Championship.
Loman dominated former champion Bibiano Fernandes in the main card of ONE on Prime Video 4: Abbasov vs. Lee last Saturday that could earn him a possible crack at the vacant bantamweight division.
It wads an impressuive performance for “The Sniper” as he wore down Fernandes who he attacked relentessly to win a unanimous decision during their 153-pound catchweight bout.
Loman said after the bout: “The game plan went well,…I was confident with my striking and wrestling.”
He added: “He’s a former champion is a legend in the sport and he’s tough.”
The 27-year old Loman was ferocious right at the beginning where he peppered Fernandes with low kicks and was not intimidated of the BJJ specialist. Loman even scored a takedown and going for a ground and pound assault.
A big shot by Fernandes at the start of the second round saw Loman on his butt but was quick to get back on his feet as he pinned the Brazilian to the cage then sent the action to the ground for an intense grappling match.
Entering the third round, Loman put more pressure on Fernandes then scored another take down for a ground and pound until the final bell.
“Our hard work paid off,” said Loman, who has won over formidable foes – Fernandes, Yusup Saadulaev and Shoko Sato. It was the 11th straight victory for Loman and his 17th MMA career victory.
But former bantamweight king Kevin Belingon suffered a stoppage loss during his return to the cage against Kim Jae Woong.
Belingon was caught with a vicious right straight-left hook combo while charging his way in, dropping the Filipino to the mat.
Kim then rained punches on the fallen Belingon until the referee called a halt in the bout. The time was 2:33 into the first round.
The defeat was Belingon’s fifth-straight since losing his title to Fernandes in March 2019. Pigeon Lobien
