Luisita opens with two shot lead on MSW in Seniors Fil Champ

Luisita Golf and Country Club opened its bid for the premiere Senior Fil Championship title as it carded 123 points and take a two shot lead on defending champion Manila Southwoods in the 72nd Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament at the Camp John Hay golf course Sunday.

Benjamin Sumulong carried the Luisita’s flag high as he shot a tournament best one over 70 for 35 points to pace the Tarlac based squad.

Sumulong carded four birdies against five bogeys for his total which propelled the team to the opening lead. He had no pick up.

Martin Ilagan came out with 30 points, while Danilo Cruz and Rodel Mangulabnan shot identical 29s to count for the team which got a mere 22 from former professional Eddie Bagtas that did not count.

Raul Minoza led the charge for the defending champion team from Carmona, Cavite after carding a two over 71 or 34 points. Southwoods mainstay Junjun Plana had 30 points, while Theodore Pascual and Manfred Guangko added 29 and 28, respectively to count.

“It’s better to be ahead even just by two points than being behind,” said Sumulong.

“But then this is just the opening, everybody’s jittery noting that the last tournament was in 2019,” said Sumulong, citing Bagtas’s bad opening score and even Plana who just made 30 at the CJH.

“The real fight will be at the Baguio Country Club and we hope to increase our lead tomorrow before play shifts here,” said Sumulong at the BCC Veranda after his play.

Riviera Golf suffered a two point penalty and saw its deficit on Southwoods swell to 10 from eight after carding 113 points. Riviera now have 11 points, five up on Mamala Bay while Leeward Fil-Am of Hawaii has 92 and good for fifth and last spot.

Three players scored 29 – Jong Myung Lee, Koji Yasuma and Kying Young Jung – however the last was given a two point penalty. Mariano Vincent Infante scored 26 to count for the team.

Meanwhile, former Fil Championship king Megafiber opened with a one shot lead on defending champion Manila Southwoods in the Am Championship at the BCC course.

Jose Ma. Hechanova led Megafiber with 28 points. Renato Unson had 25, while Domingo Manuel and Bing Bunye added 21 and 14 points respectively.

Raulito Magpantay led Southwoods with 24, while Thirdy Escanao, Joseph Tambunting and Alexander Ignacio counted after 22, 21 and 20 points, in that order.

Srixon and Alpha Phi Omega are tied at third with 85 points.

Razcals Winaca scored 68 points and retain its 12 point lead over Team Foretee in Regular Am F going to the CJH course in the last two days.

Noel Lamsis paced the team with 22, Bernard Capuyan and Danny Dangatan had 16 points, while Nestor Pablo added 14 and the team tallied 143 after two days.

Foretee matched the leader’s production of 68 for 131 points. Karlo Denney Ilano paced the team with 20, Francisco de Leon made 19, while Ronald Michael Ubana and Armando Sison added 16 and 13, respectively to count.

Jasper managed 58 points for a 124 two day aggregate and its lead of 11 on fourth ranked City of Pines dwindled to five after the latter shot 64 points for 119.

The Baguio councilor Michael Lawana-led Pines improved to fourth from fifth after outscoring erstwhile fourth ranked Palm Grove which only made 55 points for 114.

Vancouver Horizon Golf Association moved past day one leader Baguio Blue Bloods Eagles after shooting 54 and 113 total.

Blue Bloods came up with 48 points and with its opening round of 62 now tallies 110.

Baguio City Golf Team remained at third spot with 98 after a day two 47.
