PARISH PRIEST IN BAGUIO CITY, A VICTIM OF STRAY BULLET DURING NEW YEAR’S EVE

BAGUIO CITY— A 60-year-old parish priest of St. Joseph Parish Church in Barangay Irisan, Baguio City, suffered from a gunshot wound from a stray bullet on the feast of New Year’s Eve, January 1, 2023.

According to the priest he was invited to celebrate New Year’s Eve at his parishioner’s house situated in Purok 7, Barangay Irisan, Baguio City. While they were busy looking at the beautiful display of lights, he suddenly felt that something had fallen on his left shoulder.

“”Kinakapkap ko meron akong ano na parang, akala ko lang ano lang ng mga fireworks. Habang kinakapkap ko, nakapkap ko yung yung sludge, tapos nagiging madulas na yung damit, yung fluid—dugo na pala yun.” He said.

A slug of a 9-millimeter caliber has been recovered on his left shoulder and is now under the control of the Forensic Division, which will undergo through Ballistic Test and Gun Comparison.

Baguio City Police Office City Director Francisco Bulwayan Jr. said that the lone case shall not be taken lightly and the owner must face the rule of law.

“Since 9mm kasi ang karamihan sa mga issued firearms ng mga law enforcement agencies natin so we can start from there and hopefully licensed yung hindi loose firearms yung we can trace dahil may mga database na tayo.”

Meanwhile, the parish priest is now in good condition and is regaining his strength in the convent located at Barangay Irisan.

The stray bullet incident is the lone case recorded in Baguio City, while there are 5 cases of firecrackers-related incidents recorded in the City of Pines.
