PBBM aims to strengthen the use of technology in disaster response

The government is now targeting to intensify the use of modern technology to inform the public about the threats of typhoons and La Niรฑa in the country.

Whenever heavy rains fall, Nanay Nora from Barangay Camp 7, Baguio City canโ€™t help but worry.

Not only could their business be affected if Kennon Road is closed, but there have also been reported landslides and rising water levels in Bued river.

โ€œYou really have to be ready for whatever happens, you must really be prepared,โ€ says Nora Bugnay, resident.

(Talagang ready ka dapat kung anong mangyari, dapat you are ready talaga.)

On the other hand, Jordan is constantly monitoring the weather through television and cell phones, and he explained, โ€œBut sometimes it fails because if thereโ€™s no feasibility study, thatโ€™s the problem weโ€™re facing now.โ€

(Pero sometimes, nagiging palpak kasi kung walang feasibility study yun, nagiging problema sa atin ngayon.)

After typhoon Carina hit the country, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants to strengthen the governmentโ€™s dissemination of knowledge and information to the public.

Just this past Tuesday, July 30, the President ordered agencies to prioritize the lives of every Filipino in any disaster.

Meanwhile, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum has assured the provision of information on the threats of La Niรฑa in the country, he also mentioned, โ€œWe need to monitor the possible storms that may occur during La Niรฑa.โ€

(Kailangang bantayan natin ang mga bagyo na posibleng mangyari kapag may La Niรฑa.)

In addition, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Cordillera reminded the responsibilities of officials in barangays, towns, cities, and provinces during disasters.

โ€œThereโ€™s no vacuum in our LGUs, but when they leave, their locality might be affected,โ€ says Araceli San Jose, Regional Director of DILG – CAR.

(Walang vacuum sa ating mga LGUs, pero kapag umalis, kapag natamaan ang kanilang locality.)

The president also assured that the government is focused on developing and utilizing technology to ensure everyoneโ€™s safety during calamities.
