Petecio shocks world number 1, Paalam makes it 3 for 3 for RP boxing team

Nesthy Petecio registered a shock win Monday and is one win from a medal finish in the Tokyo Olympics as the Philippine boxing team remains perfect with the youthful Carlo Paalam survived a two time Olympian to move into the round of 16.

Petecio survived top ranked Lin Yu Ting of Taiwan for a hard earned 3-2 win in the round of 16 at the Kokugikan Stadium in the Japanese capital to advance to the quarterfinals.

It was a close victory for the International Hotel and Restaurant student of University of Baguio who on the cards of judges 2, 4 and 5, 29-28, but somehow came up short for judges 1 and 3 who saw it 29-28 in favor of the Taiwanese number one.

Petecio earned four of the judges nods in the first round, 10-9, with judge 1, who favored the Taiwanese. Then it was a complete reversal in the second round as all but judge 4 going for Lin setting up an exciting third round where judges 3 and 4 favoring Lin.

This as Paalam earned the nod of all judges but one for a 4-1 win over Ireland’s Brendan Irvine.

Paalam started strongly and won on all the judges’ cards 10-9. In round 2, he failed to satisfy judges 2 and 3, then judges 3 and 5 giving their consent to Irvine in the third and last round.

It was a 30-27, 29-28, 28-29, 30-27, 29-28, for the UB Senior High School graduate with only judge 3 giving his vote in favor of Irvine.

Paalam is set to face Algerian Moamed Flissi, a three time Olympian, in the round of 16 on Saturday, July 31 at 10:48 AM, Philippine time.

Paalam won a breakthrough medal in a major competition by winning a 2018 Asian Games bronze in 2018. He notched a gold medal in the 2019 SEA Games in front of the home crowd.

Petecio will next face Yeni Marcela Arias Castaneda of Colombia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, July 28.

The 30-year old and ninth ranked Columbian Stanimira Nikoaeva of Bulgaria, 3-2, in the round of 16.

Irish Magno, the UB criminology student, will face Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand on Thursday in the women’s flyweight round of 16.

The ninth ranked Jitpong unanimously decisioned Algerian Roumaysa Boualam in the round of 32. Also on Thursday, medal hopeful Eumir Marcial starts his campaign in the round of 16 against an unknown opponent yet.
