PHILIPPINES, EYES IMPROVED AIR CONNECTIVITY AFTER BAGGING ‘DESTINATION OF THE YEAR’ AWARD

The Philippines has committed to further strengthening its tourism sector following its recent recognition as the “Destination of the Year” at the Routes Asia 2025 Awards held in Australia.

Officials say the award highlights the importance of air connectivity in boosting both domestic and international tourism.

According to Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, the award is a testament to the country’s close collaboration with stakeholders in the aviation and travel industries, emphasizing a shared vision of positioning the Philippines as a globally competitive destination.

“We deeply appreciate our partner airlines and the entire aviation sector for their strong commitment to expanding access and improving connectivity across our archipelagic nation,” Frasco said in a statement.

DOT said that improved connectivity has helped spotlight popular destinations such as Siargao, Batanes, Panglao, and Coron.

These developments are a result of the joint efforts of DOT, the Department of Transportation, and other agencies working to modernize key airports and restore suspended routes across the country.

The recognition also reflects the impact of the ongoing “Love the Philippines” tourism campaign, which has enhanced global interest in the country’s natural attractions, cultural heritage, and emerging destinations.

Last year, the Philippines welcomed around 5.94 million international tourists, with growing interest from both foreign and local travelers in exploring lesser-known spots in regions like the Cordillera.
