In a move to fast-track the justice process in the country, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is pushing for stronger coordination between the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
According to DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, delays in court cases are often due to lack of coordination between agencies involved in investigation and prosecution.
“For the longest time, this time we win together,” Remulla said, emphasizing the need for unity between the PNP and DOJ, especially in case build-up, legal procedures, and evidence handling.
DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla agreed, saying, “Those who break the law must be held accountable. That’s why we created the TPLEA. I told my friend, if there’s one thing we should institutionalize, it’s this, it should become standard operating procedure.”
On June 3, the two departments formally launched the Training and Educational Program for DOJ Prosecutors and Law Enforcement Agents (TPLEA).
The program aims to ensure both investigators and prosecutors are on the same page when it comes to procedures and legal requirements.
“Justice will prevail because we took the time to communicate and prepare, not just to fight crime on the streets, but also in the courtroom,” added Secretary Remulla.
In Baguio City, police and prosecutors have already set a positive example.
“Actually, the relationship between the police and prosecutors here is good. If there are errors in documents, they return them for correction. They don’t just reject cases,” said PMaj. Marcy Grace Marron, Public Information Officer of Baguio City Police Office.
The DILG also emphasized that other agencies such as the NBI, Coast Guard, and PDEA must be part of the coordinated efforts for effective justice delivery.
