Pride Month is one of the most anticipated global celebrations, and for good reason.
It honors and recognizes the LGBTQIA+ community and their ongoing fight for equality.
More than just a colorful celebration of fashion and festivities, Pride Month is a powerful reminder of history, identity, and courage.
It all began with the Stonewall Riots in New York City in June 1969, when LGBTQIA+ individuals stood up against police harassment. That moment sparked the global Pride movement.
Since then, June has been marked as a time for bravery and change.
In the Philippines, the first Pride March happened in 1994, the first in Asia.
It was a historic moment that brought together Filipino LGBTQIA+ individuals to celebrate identity and fight for their rights.
Pride Month reminds everyone that all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have the right to live freely and without fear of discrimination.
Research shows that many LGBTQIA+ individuals experience mental health struggles due to societal stigma and lack of acceptance.
This is why advocacy groups like Metro Manila Pride, GALANG PH, and LoveYourself Inc. continue to provide platforms for LGBTQIA+ voices and push for gender equality education.
Every June, Pride Marches, discussions, film screenings, and other events are held to raise awareness on LGBTQIA+ issues, including the continued delay in the passage of the SOGIE Rights Bill.
And Pride Month is not just for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
It’s also a celebration of allies, those who are not part of the community but stand with them in the fight for equal rights and full acceptance.
