The municipality of Pugo, La Union is banking on its rich culture and adrenaline-packed activities to boost tourism and economic growth.

Known for its intricate wood carvings, Pugo’s artisans have gained international recognition, with their works even reaching prestigious exhibits like the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Spain.

Christopher Atiwon, a local artist, emphasized the uniqueness of their craft.

“Our creations are carefully thought out and meticulously crafted to ensure high quality,” Atiwon said.

The wood carving industry has also provided livelihoods for many residents.

Cecile Dulnuan, who runs a furniture and carving business, said that the municipal government’s support, particularly during local festivals and exhibits, has helped promote their work.

“The municipality has given us a voice and a platform to showcase our products,” she said.

Municipal tourism officer Emeelyn Layaban-Takio highlighted the importance of preserving local traditions.

“It’s encouraging to see that cultural heritage is being preserved,” she said.

The Tinungbo Festival, now in its seventh year, has been instrumental in promoting Pugo’s local products and traditions.

The festival features various competitions, including drum and lyre performances and traditional bamboo cooking demonstrations.

Pugo Mayor Kurt Walter Martin said tourism has provided opportunities for employment and economic growth.

“We don’t rely on aid—we focus on development. Progress in Pugo should not be dictated by politics but by unity,” he said.

Aside from cultural tourism, Pugo is also gaining recognition as an adventure tourism destination, with several resorts offering outdoor activities and extreme sports like enduro motorcycling.

With tourism on the rise, the local government is also exploring new potential tourist destinations within the province.
