To help prevent the rise of rabies cases in Pangasinan, the provincial government and the local government of Mangaldan held a free anti-rabies vaccination drive on September 30 in line with the observance of World Rabies Day.
The event, staged at the Mangaldan Municipal Hall grounds, drew over 180 pet owners. More than 400 animals received free vaccines administered by veterinarians from the Municipal Agriculture Office.
The activity aimed to encourage Pangasinenses to participate in building a rabies-free community and to promote responsible pet ownership.
One pet owner expressed her relief, saying, “This is good news for us pet lovers because the vaccination is free. We don’t have to spend money going to the vet, and we can use those savings for pet food or vitamins.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 59,000 people die of rabies every year worldwide, with 95 percent of cases recorded in Asia and Africa.
Officials stressed the importance of regular pet vaccination not only to protect animals but also to safeguard the public.
The Municipal Agriculture Office also reminded residents not to let their pets roam freely in public areas to prevent the spread of rabies.
Pet owners were urged to immediately seek medical attention at an animal bite treatment center within 24 hours if their pets show symptoms such as excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, or unusual agitation.
This year’s World Rabies Day carries the theme, “Act Now: You, Me, and the Community.”
