Raquinel upsets South African champ

A year after losing to Giemel Magramo, Jayr Raquinel is back to his winning ways as he upset a South African fighter over the weekend.

Raquinel scored a second round knockout on previously undefeated South Africa junior bantamweight champion Landi Ngxeke last Sunday at the International Convention Center in East London, a city in South Africa known for its beaches.

Raquinel (13-2-1 win-loss-draw card with nine knockouts) dropped the taller and rangier Ngxeke in the second round. Ngxeke was undefeated since his debut in 2018 and was rated number 8 by the World Boxing Council at 115 pounds prior to his loss to the Highland Boxing Promotions fighter and dropped to 9-1-1 with 4 Kos.

Highland top brass Brico Santig said that Raquinel has been in training camp at the Highland Boxing Gym in Sampaloc for four months with trainor Alan Alegria.

Santig added that the fighter has been training for whatever fight they could negotiate possibly in Bangkok, Thailand were Santig is based most of the time. Santig splits his time also in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and at his original gym and home in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Raquinel has previously fought in Japan and Dubai and Santig said that they are eyeing another fight in Jaoan where they hope they can arrange it with the reigning World Boxing Organization junior bantamweight belt holder, Kazuto Ioka.

The win came exactly a year after losing to Magramo.

Meanwhile, on the same day, however, another Highland boxer fell in Sucat, Paranaque when Carlo Magali was unanimously decided by former Olympian and World Boxing Association – Asia super featherweight king Charly Suarez.

Late last month, another Highland boxer fell in South Africa with Jelbirt Lerato Dlamini in their scheduled 10 round featherweight fight. Pigeon Lobien
