RECOGNIZING THE UNSUNG HEROES IN HEALTH

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

Every May 7, the country honors its health workers—doctors, nurses, midwives, and other medical frontliners—through Health Workers Day.

These health professionals play a vital role in maintaining the nation’s well-being.

From emergencies to daily healthcare needs, they are always ready to serve.

Health Workers Day was established through Republic Act No. 10069, signed in 2010 by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The law aims to recognize the invaluable contributions of health workers in the Philippines.

They are often called “unsung heroes,” especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, where many worked tirelessly around the clock to serve the public.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), over 200,000 health workers currently serve in the country.

These include doctors, nurses, midwives, nutritionists, pharmacists, and medical technologists.

Studies show that the quality of healthcare in a country heavily depends on the support and working conditions provided to health workers.

When they receive proper salaries, benefits, and training, their services become even more effective.

This special day serves as a reminder that health workers are our true frontliners—modern-day heroes who continue to protect and care for us.

Kudos and thank you to all our health champions.
