It’s all set for the second part of the 72nd Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament Tuesday with many time defending champion Manila Southwoods hoping to make another splash and bring home the premier Fil-Am Championship trophies.

With Fil-Am and city officials led by co-chair Anthony de Leon of the Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay golf’s Jude Eustaquio and Baguio mayor Benjamin Magalong firing the ceremonial tee at both courses, the stage is set for more than 600 players from the Asia Pacific area including the American continent for the six day event backed by Columbia, 3K Rock Engineering, Boysen and Toyota which raffled a car last week during the seniors division and is also assured to give on during the awards ceremony on Sunday.

Games will start in the lower flights Tuesday, while the Championship and higher flights will see action on Wednesday.

Manila Southwoods comes in with another strong contending team with mainstays Carl Corpuz, Kristoffer Arevalo and Aidric Chan mixing up with new recruits Gabriel Manotoc and Jeff Jung.

Southwoods, which made it successful debut in 1997 and has won almost every staging since then except several occasions, is the favorite to win anew.

Out to challenge the Carmona, Cavite based squad is Januarius Team 1 which is bannered by former pro player Raymund Sangil and backstopped by Marco Olives, RJ Rizada, Terence Macatangay and Kirby Lachica.

“We are expecting good teams to give Southwoods a run for its money,” said Fil-Am co-chair Eustaquio during an earlier press conference.

Last week, Manila Southwoods successfully defended its Fil-Championship flight title with now senior player Junjun Plana leading the way and who took the individual group 1 trophy after dominating the field. Plana was part of the first batch of Southwoods champions in 1997 and was part in the 22 of the 25 years the Cavite based team has played in the Fil-Am. Pigeon Lobien
