A 48-year-old security guard sustained injuries after his vehicle fell into a 15-meter ravine in Bermuda Hills Subdivision, San Luis, Baguio City early Sunday morning, July 7.

The incident happened around 5 AM, alarming nearby construction workers who witnessed the vehicle plunge into the ravine.

One of the witnesses, Lincon Dinto, said they rushed to help the driver while waiting for rescuers.

“We helped lift him up to get him out of the car while waiting for the rescue team,” Dinto recalled. “The site was near our project, so when we saw what happened, our foreman told us to help out. We all pitched in.”

Authorities responded swiftly to the incident.

Based on the initial investigation by the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), the security guard was reportedly on his way home when the accident occurred.

“According to our initial findings, the victim accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake while driving down the slope,” said PMaj. Marcy Grace Marron, BCPO Public Information Officer. “That caused the vehicle to speed up and eventually fall into the ravine.”

Despite the presence of a riprap barrier in the area, the car still plunged down the steep slope, hitting a cement mixer that was also dragged down.

Dinto added, “He panicked and thought hitting the mixer would stop the car, but it just made things worse. The vehicle went further down.”

The driver sustained minor injuries and was immediately brought to the hospital for treatment.

This marks the 457th vehicular traffic incident recorded in the city this year.
