Just days after the start of the election period for national candidates in the country, political parties have begun exchanging criticisms.
One of the most heated exchanges is among senatorial candidates.
During the proclamation rally of PDP-Laban’s senatorial bets, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte made a statement regarding incumbent senators.
This statement alarmed some lawmakers, including Lanao del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong.
He called on the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the alleged threats made by the former president.
As a result, Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) Director PMaj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III has already filed complaints of inciting to sedition and unlawful utterances against the former president.
During Senator Bong Go’s appearance at the Liga ng mga Barangay event in Zambales, held at the Baguio Convention Center, he defended the former president, insisting that the statement was merely a joke and should not be taken seriously.
Meanwhile, President Duterte’s sister, Senator Imee Marcos, shrugged off the controversy.
The NBI is still determining whether the former president’s remarks should be officially investigated as threats.
Meanwhile, some senators have already dismissed his statements.
