As the summer season approaches, many people are looking for ways to stay hydrated. But did you know that there is a vegetable that is not only nutritious but also composed of 90% water? That vegetable is singkamas (jicama).
During hot weather, dehydration and dry skin are common concerns. Singkamas can help prevent excessive thirst and keep the skin hydrated.
But why does singkamas have such high water content?
This is because it is a root crop, meaning it grows underground and serves as a water reservoir for the plant. As a result, its flesh is naturally juicy and crisp.
Originally cultivated in Mexico and Central America, singkamas was introduced to the Philippines during the Spanish era. Because it is easy to grow and offers numerous health benefits, it quickly became a staple in Filipino diets.
Aside from its high water content, singkamas is rich in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.
Vitamin C strengthens the immune system, fiber aids digestion, and antioxidants help protect the body’s cells from damage.
Studies show that the regular consumption of singkamas can also help regulate blood sugar levels, making it a recommended food for people with diabetes. Additionally, its fiber content helps prevent constipation and promotes better digestion.
More than just a refreshing and nutritious snack, singkamas is a well-loved treat among Filipinos, especially during the summer season.
So, as temperatures rise, don’t forget to include singkamas in your diet!
