In line with the promotion of sustainability, the 13 SM Supermalls’ initiatives to be bike-friendly were given acknowledgment at the Mobility Awards 2023.
SM Mall of Asia was hailed as the “Top 2 Most Bicycle-Friendly Large Establishment” and received a Silver Award for having around 18 kilometer shared and dedicated bike lanes, bike racks, vending machines and, service repair stations.
The same award was given to SM City Baguio, SM Center Pasig, SM City Marikina, SM City Masinag, SM City Angono, SM Cherry Antipolo, SM Seaside, City Cebu, at SM Lanang sa Davao.
Various SM Supermalls were also hailed as Bronze Awardees particularly, SM City North Edsa, SM City Fairview, SM City Manila, and SM City San Lazaro.
Around the country, SM Supermalls have about 500 bike racks and 80 repair stations. With the help of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA),
European Embassies, and cycling advocates, SM malls also launched their educational materials like Biker’s Manual and Bike Safety Videos, which aim to disseminate information regarding biking.
“At SM Supermalls, we believe in promoting a healthier and more environmentally conscious
lifestyle. Receiving these recognitions motivates us to continue innovating and enhancing our
facilities to better serve the needs of our cycling community,” SM Supermalls’ President
Steven Tan stated.
SM Cares, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of SM Supermalls are the ones giving assistance and support to the biking community through their Bike-Friendly SM Program.
The Mobility Awards, organized by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), The Climate Reality Project Philippines, MNL Moves, 350.org Pilipinas, and Pinay Bike Commuter Community, in partnership with the League of Cities Philippines and 27 Regional Business Partners, aim to celebrate the initiatives of those who promote sustainable transportations.
On the other hand, SM Cares does not only advocate biking but also other programs for the environment, PWDs, women and children, mothers, senior citizens, and social entrepreneurship.
