This 31-year-old man now finds himself in the custody of the Baguio City Police Office Station 7.
This happened after he snatched a cellphone at around 8 PM on November 18 at the basement of the Maharlika Livelihood Complex.
“The victim was using her cellphone when suddenly the suspect grabbed it and ran away,” PMaj. Marcy Grace Marron, Spokesperson of Baguio City Police Office, narrated.
The suspect took a cellphone worth 5,000 pesos, and the 39-year-old female victim immediately asked for help.
“Concerned citizens chased the suspect and caught him. During this time, our patrolling police officers also saw the commotion and apprehended the suspect,” Marron added.
The news team tried to get a statement from the suspect, but he refused to speak.
He now faces theft charges.
This marks the 148th theft case recorded in the city this year, which is higher compared to the 145 cases in 2023.
As more visitors are expected in the city during the “ber” months, the BCPO is ready to handle the situation.
“We’ve dispatched many police officers for maximum visibility. In addition to uniformed personnel, there are also officers in civilian clothes. When in crowded places, be extra cautious with your belongings, especially your cellphones, money, and bags. As much as possible, keep them in front,” Marron advised.
In 2023, Baguio City welcomed 1.3 million tourists, with the highest number of visitors during the Panagbenga Festival and the “ber” months.
According to the Baguio City Police Office, it is expected that more people will visit this year, so extra vigilance is essential.
