Candidates vying for local positions in Baguio City gathered recently for a much-anticipated Leaders’ Forum, where discussions turned tense as political rivals shared their platforms and clashed on various issues.
The event, seen as a chance for candidates to win over the hearts of voters, began with mayoral and vice mayoral hopefuls introducing their visions for the city.
However, exchanges between incumbent Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan and Councilor Mylen Yaranon, both running for the same seat, quickly escalated and spilled onto social media platforms.
The tension didn’t end there. Several city council candidates also exchanged sharp remarks, further fueling the political heat.
Congressional aspirants took the stage next, nearly all expressing opposition to political dynasties, except for one candidate whose spouse is also running for office.
The spotlight then shifted to the heated showdown between incumbent Mayor Benjamin Magalong, seeking re-election, and Congressman Mark Go, who is running for mayor.
Political dynasty issues once again took center stage during their exchange.
Magalong challenged fellow candidates to disclose their assets publicly, to which Go responded with his own statements.
Meanwhile, mayoralty candidate Mark Andrew Bandoc Directo stood out with his calm demeanor.
Emphasizing peace and unity, he urged Baguio residents not to let politics cause division.
He also appealed for voters to give new leaders a chance, saying the current officials should take a break and allow fresh leadership under his campaign theme #MaunladNaBaguioDapat.
The final outcome will be revealed on May 12, as the people of Baguio head to the polls.
