TOURISTS, WELCOME THE NEW YEAR IN BAGUIO CITY

BY: JOSE ROBERT INVENTOR

Despite the rainy and overcast weather in Baguio City, tourists continued their sightseeing activities, such as Michael’s family, who traveled all the way from Zambales.

“It’s like magic, Baguio is something else. It’s really so much fun,” said Michael Fallorin, a tourist.

The rain didn’t stop this group from Pangasinan either.

Equipped with full gear, including helmets, they joined others at the biking rink for some cycling and go-kart rides.

They said this was part of their New Year’s resolution as responsible motorists.

“This is our last ride for the year, and we decided on Baguio since we’ve been planning to come here for a while. Wherever we ride, we always prioritize safety,” said Kim Magat, also a tourist.

Some tourists also enjoyed horseback riding at Wright Park.

Abby, also a tourist, expressed, “It’s really fun, we’ve enjoyed our trip to Baguio to the fullest.”

At the nearby Mines View Park, tourists flocked shoulder to shoulder.

Some enjoyed taking pictures wearing traditional Cordilleran attire, while others posed with horses and took photos of the Instagram-worthy views.

We also caught up with Michael’s family from Mindanao, who decided to welcome the New Year here.

“It’s so enjoyable here! We planned this trip and love how cold it is, it’s like ice! We’re thrilled because this is our first time seeing a mountain covered in houses,” said Michael Vincent, also a tourist.

The influx of tourists has also caused heavy traffic congestion.

Adding to the struggle is the difficulty in finding public transportation.

Video footage from the weekend shows long lines for taxis and jeepneys in the central business district. Vehicles were nearly at a standstill.

The Baguio City LGU expected this scenario.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong, stated, “We really need a smart system to manage traffic. The sheer number of vehicles overwhelms our roads and reduces the level of service.”

The Baguio City Police Office earlier stated that around 60,000 vehicles are expected to roam around Baguio during the holiday season.
