Bus and UV Express operators in Baguio City are bracing for a sharp increase in passenger volume ahead of the Holy Week, with daily commuters expected to reach up to 10,000.
A week before the holiday rush, travelers like Olive Marinas have already begun their journeys to avoid overcrowding. “It’s really stressful if you don’t book early. You should book at least two days before your departure,” she shared.
Lea Flores, who plans to travel to Pangasinan, said she intends to leave earlier to beat the long queues and heavy traffic, recalling last year’s difficult travel experience due to delayed buses and the summer heat.
Bus companies are preparing by requesting special permits from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to deploy additional units during peak days from Holy Tuesday through Easter Sunday.
Safety inspections for buses and drivers are also underway.
“The safety of our buses is a top priority. We’re inspecting each vehicle and ensuring our staff are well-rested for safe travel,” said Rey Quinto, Terminal Master at a local bus terminal.
UV Express operators on Otek Street are also preparing to accommodate overflow passengers, especially those bound for La Union and Pangasinan. “If buses are full, passengers can ride with us. Our vans are deluxe and comfortable,” said UV Express driver Joe Melgazo.
Over 300 police officers will be deployed to manage security and traffic in terminals, while joint inspections by the LTFRB and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) will ensure safe and orderly travel for the public.
