Around five sacks of waste are disposed of weekly at Angel’s store.
She was among those concerned upon hearing about the closure of the Capas, Tarlac sanitary landfill, where Baguio City’s waste is disposed of.
On July 16, 2024, the city government received a letter from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announcing the landfill’s closure.
Two months later, Baguio City LGU selected a new waste disposal site under Metro Waste Solid Waste Management Corporation in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.
The notice of award to the winning bidder has a contract price of PHP 14,536,000 for tipping fees from October 1 to December 31, 2024.
Due to the shorter distance compared to Capas, Tarlac, Baguio City LGU anticipates reduced tipping and hauling fees, which currently reach 17 million pesos monthly for over 200 tons of waste.
“Urdaneta was able to provide complete documentation,” said Eugene Buyucan, GSO Officer.
Currently, the General Services Office continues planning to ensure proper waste disposal, though the lack of waste segregation by residents remains a significant challenge.
