TV host Drew Arellano’s recent social media post about undergoing vasectomy quickly went viral last week.
The post caught public attention, with many expressing admiration for his courage to speak openly about a topic that remains a taboo for many men.
But what exactly is a vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a permanent form of family planning for men.
It is a simple and safe surgical procedure that prevents sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation.
The procedure does not affect sexual desire or performance, it only serves as a permanent method of contraception.
Vasectomy dates back to the 1800s, initially used in 1899 to treat men with prostate issues.
By the 20th century, it became widely recognized as a major method of male contraception.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health (DOH), the failure rate of vasectomy is around 1%, making it one of the most effective family planning methods.
Studies from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other global health institutions also show that vasectomy is cost-effective, safe, and can contribute to population management, especially in developing countries like the Philippines.
Despite these benefits, very few Filipino men undergo the procedure due to lingering stigma and fear that it would diminish their masculinity.
That’s why promoting awareness and understanding about vasectomy remains important. It is not something to be ashamed of or kept secret.
Men like Drew Arellano, who bravely share their experience, help open minds and encourage acceptance.
