Two waterspouts were seen forming one after the other in the waters off Sabtang, Batanes on Wednesday afternoon, drawing amazement from some residents.
The first, a smaller waterspout, was sighted at around 1:45 PM and lasted for a few minutes before dissipating.
Shortly after, at around 2:05 PM, a larger waterspout formed and remained visible for several minutes before it too disappeared.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), waterspouts are natural occurrences, especially when thunderstorm clouds are present over bodies of water.
“These kinds of phenomena aren’t rare,” explained Ramil Tuppil, Chief Meteorologist of PAGASA Isabela. “They often happen over our seas when cumulonimbus clouds form, especially during strong thunderstorms in the area.”
While the spectacle was awe-inspiring, PAGASA reminded the public to observe such events with caution, as some waterspouts could reach land and cause damage.
Tuppil also addressed public concern that the waterspouts could be a sign of an incoming strong storm.
“There’s no scientific basis for that fear,” he said. “Waterspouts don’t mean disaster is coming. These are normal weather patterns, especially if there are developing systems nearby. But they’re not signs of some kind of catastrophe.”
Localized thunderstorms are expected to continue over parts of Luzon, which could occasionally trigger similar weather formations.
