In addition to senators, congressmen are also lawmakers in the country.
They belong to the legislative branch under the lower house.
But what are their other responsibilities?
Congressmen represent each district in the country.
They also protect and defend the interests of the districts they represent.
They play a vital role in expressing opinions or concerns that are considered in lawmaking.
Another duty is to review and approve the national budget.
In doing so, they ensure that every government agency and local government unit (LGU) has funds allocated every year.
They also lead committees that discuss various issues.
To be eligible to serve in Congress, one must be a natural-born Filipino, at least 25 years old, a registered voter, a resident of the country for two years, and able to read and write.
A congressman’s term lasts three years, and they can serve for up to three consecutive terms.
Currently, more than 300 congressmen are sitting in the House of Representatives.
