WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO RUN FOR SENATOR?

The Senate is one of the most important parts of our country’s legislature. It is responsible for crafting and reviewing bills that are submitted to the president for signing into law.

But they also have the power to try to resolve various issues. As candidacies are filed, it’s interesting to see who will be running for senator.

Apart from prominent politicians, some actors and well-known personalities have also entered the race. This raises questions among many about whether there are specific requirements for running for the Senate.

According to the 1987 Philippine Constitution, Article 4, Section 3, it is stated that to be part of the Senate, a candidate must be a natural-born Filipino, a resident of the Philippines for at least two years, 35 years old, able to read and write, and a registered voter.

Many now argue that another qualification should be added, requiring candidates to have a higher level of education. This means that anyone who meets the qualifications can run for senator.

Like the president, a senator serves for six years. Today, there are many views and opinions on leadership in our country. Each senator has their agenda, programs, and platforms to promote for our nation.

Therefore, every candidate must be responsible in leadership and service. As voters, we need to be wise in choosing who we elect.
