What Is Yoga?

by: Valerie Ann Dismaya

Want a calmer mind? Why not try yoga? But what exactly is yoga?

When people hear the word “yoga,” the first thing that often comes to mind is relaxation and meditation.

But yoga is more than just a form of exercise, it is an ancient practice from India that aims to create unity between the mind, body, and soul.

The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit term meaning “union” or “to join.”

It dates back to the Vedic period, mentioned in the ancient Indian text Rigveda, where early forms of breathing techniques, meditation, and body postures were first described.

Yoga was originally practiced by sages in India as a form of deep reflection and self-awareness through meditation.

They believed that by mastering breathing and movement, one could achieve calmness of mind and a healthier body.

Over time, this ancient practice spread to other parts of the world.

By the 19th century, yoga began gaining recognition in Western countries when Indian teachers traveled to Europe and America to share its principles.

Today, yoga has become a popular form of relaxation and stress management, with more than a hundred known types across the globe.

Some, like Power Yoga, focus on building strength, while others such as Hatha and Yin Yoga promote relaxation.

There’s also Hot Yoga, performed in a heated room to ease muscle tension.

Yoga isn’t just an exercise, it’s a way of life that teaches balance and mindfulness.
