Twenty pesos per kilo of rice.
This is now the goal for every Filipino, promised by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the 2022 national elections.
But did you know that between 2002 and 2008, the price of regular milled rice was even lower?
Back then, rice was only between 17 pesos to 18 pesos per kilo.
But by mid-2008, rice prices started to rise to 28.26 pesos per kilo.
And it continued to increase in the following years.
This rise was attributed by any to inflation.
Meanwhile, did you know that China is the worldโs largest producer of rice each year?
Their production reaches 144.62 million metric tons.
This means they account for 28% of global rice production.
The Philippines ranks seventh in terms of production.
We produce 12.5 million metric tons annually.
This is 2% of global rice production.
When it comes to rice consumption, Asian countries lead.
But compared to Filipinos who consider rice a staple, some countries like Mongolia prefer meat as their primary food.
