WHY DO SOME PEOPLE LOVE SPICY FOOD?

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

Since ancient times, chili peppers have been discovered and used by the early people of Central America.

In fact, during Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, one of his main goals was to find the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands.

Chili peppers are estimated to have been in use for over 6,000 years. Archaeologists have found that the Aztecs, Mayans, and Olmecs in Central America used chili peppers as a seasoning and food preservative.

They were not only used as ingredients but also played a role in rituals and ceremonies.

This is how chili peppers became a part of cuisines worldwide, such as curry in India, sambal in Indonesia, and kimchi in Korea.

From a humble spice, the importance of spicy food grew in both culture and health.

But did you know that eating chili peppers has several health benefits?

It can help boost metabolism, lower blood pressure, and strengthen the immune system.

For some, eating spicy food is even a source of happiness. This is because capsaicin, the chemical compound responsible for the heat in chili peppers, triggers the release of endorphins or “happy hormones.”

Chili peppers are also a vital agricultural product in the Philippines.

In our country, siling labuyo is a popular spice used in various dishes like Bicol Express, laing, and dips. Its price can sometimes go as high as 500 pesos to 1,000 pesos per kilo.

To address demand and pricing, the Department of Agriculture continues to implement programs to increase chili production. These include distributing free seeds, providing technical support, and promoting organic farming.

There are also cooperatives established for chili farmers to ensure affordable prices in the market.

Today, January 16, we celebrate International Hot and Spicy Food Day, an opportunity to honor the history and culture of spicy food in our country.
