BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

Just one more sleep and it’s New Year!

Are your New Year’s resolutions ready?

And of course, as we welcome the New Year, are your round fruits ready too?

If not, hurry up and head to the market to catch up!

But why is preparing round fruits such a common practice during the New Year?

According to Chinese beliefs, preparing round fruits is symbolic and significant.

The round shape represents money or wealth, which is why it is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.

Traditionally, twelve kinds of round fruits are prepared.

These symbolize the twelve months of the year, while others believe that the more fruits, the better!

This tradition began with the Chinese and was introduced to the Philippines during the Galleon Trade between China and the Philippines in the 16th century.

Round fruits are essential because they symbolize hope, abundance, and happiness for every family.

For many Filipinos, the New Year is a time for new beginnings, making the preparation of round fruits a way to usher in a prosperous year.

Aside from luck and wealth, some also believe that round fruits bring peace to the household.

Preparing round fruits is not just a tradition but also a cultural and spiritual practice.

However, let’s always remember not to rely solely on superstitions…

Because true fortune lies in hard work, faith, and unity within the family.

Happy and prosperous New Year to all!
