A 55-year-old woman was killed in a motorcycle collision in Solsona, Ilocos Norte, on Saturday night, March 1.
Authorities identified the victim as Merita Masiglat, while the other rider involved was 19-year-old Jerold Andres.
According to the Solsona Municipal Police Station, Andres allegedly encroached on the opposite lane and crashed into Masiglat’s motorcycle along Barangay Manalpac.
“Vehicle 1, driven by Merita Masiglat, was headed east when it was hit by Vehicle 2, driven by Jerold Andres, who was going west,” said Police Major Chris Anthony Sorsano, officer-in-charge of the Solsona police.
An initial investigation suggested that Andres may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
“We suspect that the 19-year-old rider may have been drinking, which caused him to swerve into the victim’s lane,” Sorsano added.
Both riders sustained severe head injuries, and Masiglat was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Police also noted that Masiglat was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Andres is now under medical observation and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
