A 20-year-old motorcycle rider is in critical condition after crossing into the opposite lane and colliding with an oncoming truck in Barangay Dos, Bantay, Ilocos Sur early Thursday morning, June 5.
CCTV footage from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office captured the moment two motorcycles were traveling along the road just past 4 AM.
The first motorcycle veered into the opposite lane and slammed into a truck, while the second rider managed to avoid the crash.
According to Police Captain Donaldson Pagalanan, chief of the Bantay Municipal Police Station, the rider involved in the collision was intoxicated and did not have a driver’s license.
“The driver of the Honda Wave was reckless,” Pagalanan said in a phone interview. “Based on our investigation, he had been drinking with his companions prior to the accident.”
The rider was brought to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
“He’s still in the ICU and under monitoring,” Pagalanan added. “They haven’t been able to operate yet because his body isn’t stable enough.”
Meanwhile, the 47-year-old truck driver was unharmed.
He has agreed to settle damages with the rider’s family to cover the repair costs of the truck.
An elderly woman was killed after being hit by a motorcycle while crossing the national highway in Barangay Sucuyya Sur, Santa, Ilocos Sur, Saturday morning, June 7.
CCTV footage from the Santa Municipal Police Station showed the 86-year-old woman crossing the road before she was hit by a northbound motorcycle.
The impact threw her several meters away. The rider and his passenger also fell to the ground.
Police said the incident occurred at around 7:40 AM.
“She suddenly crossed the road, and the motorcycle driver couldn’t avoid her,” said Police Captain Rovic Nelmida, officer-in-charge of the Santa Municipal Police Station.
The 38-year-old rider and his 29-year-old female passenger suffered injuries but survived.
The elderly woman was rushed to the hospital but died while being treated.
According to the Santa police, the location is considered an accident-prone area due to vehicles often speeding along the highway.
“The rider who surrendered told us he was going over 70 kilometers per hour,” Nelmida said. “There are already many warning signs in the area, but we may need to add more.”
The victim’s family has decided not to press charges and instead pursue a settlement with the rider.
