Young voters will have a significant influence in the upcoming May 2025 midterm elections, as a large portion of the electorate consists of millennials and Generation Z.
First-time voter Jamal Marohon, a student, is among those preparing to cast their votes for the first time. He is carefully considering his choices.
“I’m looking for the right candidate who can help our community,” he said.
To better prepare for this responsibility, he joined a youth voter empowerment program.
“If a candidate’s platform does not align with their promises, then their position is useless,” Marohon added. “Many young people in this generation are genuinely involved in helping the community.”
According to a nationwide study, the youth will play a crucial role in shaping the results of the elections.
Data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) shows that the total number of registered voters has surpassed 69 million, with a significant portion belonging to the millennial and Gen Z demographics.
During the program, participants were reminded of the importance of their voices in the elections. Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto emphasized the need for responsible voting.
“We just need to do what we are supposed to do, given the circumstances,” Sotto said.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong also urged the youth to take their role seriously.
“Please open your eyes. You will be the leaders of the future. Don’t waste this opportunity,” Magalong said.
The event also highlighted the importance of evaluating candidates based on the pillars of character—trustworthiness, respect, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Baguio City Councilor Isabelo “Poppo” Cosalan Jr. encouraged young voters to take the time to reflect on their choices.
“Being a youth voter is not just about casting a ballot. It’s about believing in something and contributing to nation-building. Together, let’s build a more compassionate Baguio City,” he said.
With the elections approaching, the future of the country is in the hands of the voters.
