As the heat continues this summer, the Pangasinan Health Office warns parents to be wary of head lice.
“Head lice spread easily among children playing together. While not a major health risk, excessive scratching can lead to skin infections,” the Provincial Health Officer I Dr. Cielo Almoite said.
Although it is not considered a serious health risk, head lice are contagious and eventually result in discomfort as they consume blood and lay their eggs on the scalp of a person once their head is infested. Due to its contagiosity, it may cause immediate spread in one’s family.
The Department of Health (DOH) adds that lice live on in hot weather and sweaty scalps. Thus, outbreaks during summer are prevalent. One of the most common symptoms of infestation is itchiness which may cause irritability and difficulty to sleeping.
Meanwhile, Dr. Almoite reminds proper hygiene to prevent and control head lice. Although the DOH says regular bathing will not secure you from lice, avoiding borrowing clothes, accessories, and combs will.
“Kahit mga naliligo araw araw maari pa ring magkakuto. Pero kung may kuto ang isang tao dapat hindi siya nakikipag hiraman ng suklay, sumbrero et cetera. Pati punda ng unan pwede ka mahawa,” said DOH Undersecretary Eric Tayag. | Cielo Angel Nicole Abendan
