Mayor Magalong Initiates Cleanliness Standards for Public Toilets

Mayor Benjamin Magalong has taken action on the issue of public comfort rooms (CRs) in Baguio City, recognizing the need to establish standards befitting the city’s status as a tourist destination and the Summer Capital of the Philippines. Health Services Office-Sanitation Division head Robert Colewan has been tasked with crafting these standards, which will be presented and discussed during the upcoming management committee meeting las April 23 at the Baguio City Hall.

The mayor emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in public CRs, which are used by both visitors and residents. During a meeting on March 11 with Colewan, Permits and Licensing Division chief Allan Abayao, and a representative from the City Environment and Parks Management Office, Mayor Magalong expressed disappointment at the state of some CRs in restaurants and establishments he visited, describing them as “dirty and unsanitary.”

“Nakakahiya na, ang dumi-dumi ng CR nila. It’s about time siguro na maging mahigpit na tayo tungkol dito,” the mayor said as he lamented that some of the CRs don’t even have water, soap, and other sanitation paraphernalia.

He emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of cleanliness standards, noting that some CRs lack basic necessities like water, soap, and sanitation paraphernalia. Despite Baguio’s reputation as a tourist destination, many of its CRs do not meet acceptable standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

The mayor also reminded those responsible for CRs at City Hall to prioritize regular cleaning and ensure that facilities are equipped with essential amenities. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to providing clean and sanitary facilities for both residents and visitors alike. | Micko Sison
