BAGUIO, BENGUET – Pugad ni Art Studio in Baguio recently showcased an exhibition titled “EmpowerHER: Exhibition of celebrating the inspiring and creative women in our lives,” featuring the works of 35 local female artists. Held on March 16, 2024 by the studio owner and eminent artist, Art Lozano, the exhibit aimed to spotlight the talent and contributions of women in the art scene.
The event not only displayed a diverse array of artworks, including paintings, wire sculptures, crochet art, and hand sewn clothes, but also aimed to explore the themes of womanhood, struggles, and the beauty of being a woman through artistic expression.
The exhibition, meticulously planned to provide proper exposure to female artists in the local art scene, sought to challenge stereotypes and demonstrate the significant role women play in shaping the art world.
Mary Denelyn Diaz, the current art manager of Pugad ni Art Studio, who was heavily involved in organizing the exhibit and is herself a skilled painter, shared her experiences and insights as a female artist.
“Yun din kasi yung isa sa mga struggle ko like, mas nagkakaroon ng credits yung mga lalaki kaysa sa babae – pero kapag nagkaroon sila ng realization na ‘ay may ano ka sa arts despite na ganito ka’, meron kasing gender norms kahit sa art”, she stated.
The exhibition received notable support from various officials, including Councilor Homer Cupahan, Gracelyn Tique representing the Mayor of Aguinaldo, Gaspar Chilagan, Khristine Molitas representing Benguet Rep. Eric Yap, and Baguio City Councilor Leandro Yangot. Their presence highlighted the significance of celebrating women’s participation in the arts, especially during Women’s Month.
“EmpowerHER” served as a powerful testament to the talent, resilience, and creativity of female artists, while also highlighting the importance of gender equality and representation in the art world. As we progress, events like these remain pivotal in breaking down barriers and nurturing a more inclusive and diverse community within the art scene. | Izl Jem M. Rabanillo
