A bill proposed by Baguio Rep. Marques Go for the establishment of the Baguio Sports High School was approved unanimously on third and final reading by the House of Representatives.
All 277 members of the Lower House voted in favor to House Bill 8700 authored by Go which seeks to create the special high school for promising young athletes across Baguio and the Cordilleras.
The school will offer a sports-focused curriculum complemented by the general academic curriculum, said Go in a release.
He added that the “school shall be administered and supervised by the Department of Education (DepEd), in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), who will help in policy and program formulation and implementation and provide technical assistance.”
“There are so many aspiring young athletes in the country. Many promising talents do not receive adequate training and support and are not exposed to the proper opportunities to pursue their athletic dreams further. If we can provide them with the proper support, facilities, coaches and trainers, the future can only be brighter for Philippine sports,” Rep. Go said.
He added: “Establishing a sports high school in Baguio will open many opportunities for young athletes in Baguio and Cordilleras, which may be replicated in many strategic locations nationwide. With added government support, these facilities could further be improved to meet international standards.”
The bill will be now transmitted to the Senate for approval. Pigeon Lobien
